FMD DATA Safehaven

Safe & Secure Data Storage for researchers

Project Objectives

QMUL have several clinical trials groups that retain sensitive patient-identifiable data, whether obtained from NHS systems, generated internally or imported from elsewhere. To hold NHS or ONS data, these groups must hold the data on infrastructure that has a proven level of data security and suitable information governance and processes in place. These are known as data safe havens and are subject to an annual evaluation of compliance with a standard.

Achieving compliance is a complex process which requires auditing of people, processes and technology. This is managed by NHS Digital, formerly HSCIC, through their Information Governance Toolkit (IGT) programme.

The intention of this project is to provide a compliant facility to support the clinical trials for the current groups, and to provide a scalable platform to allow further growth.

The project is not one just of implementation of the safe haven, but also the successful migration from the legacy systems and the effective governance of the service for the future.

Project Governance

The project management structure has four levels, three of which represent the project management team and the fourth which sits outside the project.
